Feeling Insignificant?

Last night my wife and I were blessed to share some time with a new friend. They were explaining some exciting ways God is using them in starting a group study out of their home. While this is just the beginning, it was very clear that God was already using this group in some awesome ways. In the middle of our conversation, our friend explained that she felt insignificant and unqualified for the task before her.

Without hesitation I responded, "Then you are exactly the right person, at the right time, to do this!"

Do you ever feel insignificant and unqualified to do something God has placed before you? Well guess what? You are exactly who God is looking for in that moment! He does not need experts of scripture or evangelistic dynamos. God needs willing followers of Jesus who will take steps of faith even when it seems strange or beyond our ability.

The biblical record reveals that this one of God's favorite ways to work:

  • Moses lacked confidence and had a speaking problem, but God used him to lead the nation of Israel to freedom.

  • Rahab was a Canaanite prostitute with seemingly nothing to offer, but by faith she protected the men of Israel and saved her family in the process.

  • David was a shepherd boy, but armed with faith God used him to slay a giant and inspire a nation.

  • Ruth was a foreigner in Bethlehem, but God used her to call Boaz to be her family's Kinsman Redeemer.

  • Jesus 12 disciples were primarily made up of uneducated fishermen, but they became the first leaders of the Church. 2000 years later we can see how these men of humble beginnings were used by God to change the world.

And there are countless more examples where those came from...

What makes you different than these individuals? God is still working to change lives today, and he does it primarily through the lives of those who are following him. If you have a story of how Jesus has saved you, how he is working in your life, then you have everything you need to begin to take new steps of bold obedience.

"But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption."

- 1 Corinthians 1:27-30 (NIV)

So are you in a place where you feel insignificant? God may be about to do the most significant thing you will ever be part of! Hang in there. Listen to the leading of the Holy Spirit and follow Jesus. Knowing Jesus will likely be the only qualification you need to be effective. He will be your significance!
